Racing ahead: how PlanetF1.com reflects and fuels F1’s global boom

There was a time when following Formula 1 meant checking results on Sunday and waiting a week for the next round. Now it can be a full-time obsession fuelled by thrilling on-track drama and digital content that brings the sport to life every single day.

In 2024, Formula 1’s global fanbase jumped by 12%, reaching 826.5m* people. That’s almost 90m new fans, with surges in China, the US, Saudi Arabia and Argentina. It's a massive viewership shift driven by increased accessibility and, no doubt, great digital storytelling.

That scale of growth doesn’t happen in isolation. As the sport has expanded, so has its coverage, and for PlanetF1.com, that meant stepping up to the challenge.

“As F1’s global fanbase rises, so too do PlanetF1.com’s standards and scope in our coverage” says Mark Scott, Editor of PlanetF1.com.

“The foundations of the site are built on news coverage but over time we have expanded our content operation to include F1 data, technology, history and the lifestyle that comes with being an F1 driver.”

PlanetF1.com’s story has run parallel to the sport itself, acting as a mirror reflecting F1’s shift from elite motorsport to a contemporary global cultural phenomenon embraced by millions across continents and platforms.

The site has grown into a space that can shape how fans interact with the sport; from deep-dive analytics to behind-the-scenes features, it’s helping convert casual interest into lasting engagement.

“Rather than focus on one section of the fanbase,” Scott continues, “we want to be that one-stop shop to cater for all F1 fans and their increasingly wide range of interests that are the reason behind them following the sport.”

That ambition becomes even more relevant when you consider where the sport is and where it's heading. With the 2025 season marking F1’s 75th anniversary, expansion isn’t slowing down. Instead, there'll only be more races, sprints, and formats to keep fans hooked.

But substantial growth and extended reach must be matched by innovation and forward thinking. That’s where PlanetF1.com is already building for the future.

“In future seasons, we can expect to see more races and more sprints at even more locations around the globe in order to make F1 a true World Championship,” says Mark.

“For the fan, they will be given even more ways to watch and engage with the action, as well as being able to enjoy a deeper level of depth when it comes to personalisation.”

Coverage, in other words, must be as agile as the sport itself. The focus now is on tailoring content to fan behaviour and creating spaces for casual newcomers, hardcore fans and everyone in between. PlanetF1.com is investing in content that matches that complexity.

“The more F1 learns about viewer habits, especially younger fans, the more tailored F1 content will become. They have the product, so it is all about diversifying the way they sell it in order to spark future growth.”

"For PlanetF1.com, it’s important for us to keep up with the quick pace and continue to ensure we cater for all fans.”

The future of F1 demands speed, clarity, and relevance. It's clear that PlanetF1.com and the team are raring to race ahead, ready to continue forging real connections between the sport and the fans following it.
